Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
